Nanse Kawashima is a Japanese-born, artist, working in collage paintings.  Based in New York, Kawashima paints over areas of printed vintage ephemera and of photographs that she takes. Parts of the background of each image are isolated with the use of acrylic paint to transform the presence and symbolism of non-specific moments and places. Having moved a great deal in her youth (El Salvador, Jamaica, Japan, and Hawaii), the artist is sensitive to the iconographies of different people and places but also attempts to locate her inner landscape within these foreign environments.  The work presents invites the viewer into a realm of subconscious stillness yielding images that are magical, haunting, and nostalgic.  A self-taught artist, she is also a Reiki and Tarot Card practitioner. Kawashima has shown her work in galleries both in New York and Japan and notably, is an alumna of Spring/Break in 2016.
